Augmented reality solution for Kaunas Biennial Festival

Mobile app with integrated augmented reality for the largest contemporary art festival in Lithuania

The Client

Kaunas Biennial is the largest contemporary art festival in Lithuania, bringing together artists from various European countries. The international platform ensures broad accessibility, engages in a wide range of art events, and inspires freedom of art interpretations. Between 2020 and 2022, Indeform Interactive's team of experts collaborated with both local and international artists, to create socially inclusive artistic solutions in one of the largest exhibitions of the 13th Kaunas Biennial, "Magic Carpets". This exhibition became the main visual art event that opened the program of the cultural project "Kaunas - European Capital of Culture 2022".

The Problem

The idea of the project "Magic Carpets" encompasses various artistic forms that aim to reduce the lack of storytelling in contemporary society and to involve and encourage active public participation in cultural activities. To justify these ambitions, the curators of the exhibition sought to find a way to encourage active public participation in the activities of the event. Therefore, artistic visions were combined with innovative, augmented reality (AR) solutions developed by Indeform Interactive professionals to stimulate greater public interest and a unique, meaningful experience.

The Solution

In cooperation with the exhibition curators and both foreign and local artists, a creative and innovative art project was developed, which provided an interactive audiovisual journey through forty-two areas of Kaunas city. It was a project that combines different forms of artistic expression, history, and art, along with visualizations and technologies. Indeform Interactive's team of specialists applied their extensive experience in interactive systems development to create a highly functional and user-friendly mobile application that integrates 3D visualizations and augmented reality (AR) technology.

The mobile app enabled users to experience an immersive journey along defined routes through the urban spaces of the city. During the journey, a story was narrated that connected different areas and objects in Kaunas. QR code stations at each checkpoint promoted the engagement of exhibition visitors with an augmented reality (AR) feature in the app.

Augmented reality provided a multi-dimensional experience, complementing real-life objects with artist-created 3D visualizations. By combining traditional art forms with the latest technologies, the aim was to create a unique experience of the city, its history, culture, and art. AR technology ensured the connection between the real and the artistic world, enriching the relationship between visitors and the spaces of Kaunas city.

Value Added

  • Developed technological solutions enabled visitors to explore artistic installations of “Magic Carpets” project in an interactive and innovative way;
  • The integration of the latest technologies and artistic solutions provided a unique historical, artistic and cultural experience;
  • Solution ensured active community engagement by promoting cultural activity and participation.

Final Words

The app reflects a fusion of technology and urban culture, aiming to address the lack of storytelling and cultural participation through engaging and innovative forms. We strongly believe that the interface between art and technology is an integral and crucial part of the contemporary world, and we are happy to apply our expertise and contribute to the promotion of history, art and culture of the Kaunas city.
